Hackers hit bank account - telegraphindia.com - 27 Jul 2008

Quick detection leads to arrest in Andhra Pradesh

Balurghat, July 27: Hackers cleaned Rs 50,000 from the account of Manas Pal, but the Internet cafe owner spotted the theft minutes later and alerted the bank.

The quick detection of the theft on Friday led to an immediate arrest in Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh.

Police are investigating the possibility of the involvement of an inter-state cyber crime gang, though they are yet to find out how the server was hacked into.

The bank has returned the amount to the account of Pal, a resident of Biswaspara in Balurghat town, and “locked” it. Pal will get a new account on Monday, with his balance transferred to it.

Pal had got the shock of his life on Friday morning when he logged into the server of Axis Bank from his Internet café and found Rs 50,000 missing from his account in the local branch.

He immediately brought it to the notice of the manager of the Balurghat branch of the bank, Tamal Chakraborty.

The branch manager asked Pal to meet him in the bank immediately. There it was confirmed that the money had been “transferred” to another account in Axis Bank’s branch in Khammam district at 9.25am on the same day.

Chakraborty contacted his counterpart in Khammam. They verified the photograph and address of the account-holder, Ramana Rao, and informed the police. Rao was arrested and confessed to the crime.

According to the branch manager in Balurghat, Rao had drawn Rs 48,000 from his account and deposited it in another account in ICICI Bank in Andhra Pradesh.

Rao has reportedly claimed that he did not hack into the server, but someone had told him that Rs 50,000 would be deposited in his account on Friday.

He was reportedly told to keep Rs 2,000 as his commission and deposit the remainder to the account in ICICI Bank.

The police are still trying to establish the veracity of the claim.

The branch manager in Balurghat said the quick detection of the crime was the main reason why the case could be cracked so easily.
