Cops receive training to detect online frauds - Express News Service - 25 Jul 2008

MADURAI: A three-day training programme on detection and prevention of ATM card and online fraud for police officers of Madurai rural limit commenced at the AR grounds here on Thursday.

On the first day, ICICI bank representatives conducted the training to help the officers identify the modus operandi of the fraudsters through LCD presentations and also by discussing reported cases.

According to the trainers, ATM cards, both credit and debit cards, and online fraud were on the rise with almost all the banks issuing credit and debit cards, and providing online account for its customers.

Sophisticated scamsters were prowling the net and enticing gullible customers to part with information in what is known as ‘Phising’, where email requests ask for credit card details or redirects the customers to website to verify personal (credit card) information. According to the trainers, fraudsters use a gadget called ‘skimmers’ which captures all the details of the card holders stored in the magnetic strip at the back of the card.

The skimmed details would then be transferred to a bogus card which the scamsters misuse. Further counterfeit cards were also doing the rounds with information gathered from other sources including banking and call centres.

The training programme conducted on the initiative of ADGP Vijayakumar was inaugurated by Madurai rural SP Manohar and attended by ADSPs, DSPs, inspectors and sub inspectors in rural Madurai. Training for the second and third day of the programme would be conducted by SBI and Canara Bank respectively.
