Six get jail for Insurance fraud - - 05 Dec 2010

KOCHI: A CBI Special Court here on Saturday sentenced four people, including an official of the National Insurance Company (NIC), to six years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5.2 lakh for defrauding the insurance company of over Rs 10 lakh by submitting fake documents.

Judge S Vijayakumar sentenced KS Aniyan, administrative officer, National Insurance Company, Ernakulam branch, Prem Kumar, advocate, his wife Rosary Prem Kumar and her brother Jude Antony for cheating the insurance company by registering about 22 fake cases at the Ernakulam Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. The amount was claimed on behalf of fictitious individuals.

Aniyan, the prime accused, has been slapped a fine of Rs 3.10 lakh while the rest have been asked to pay Rs 2.1 lakh.

The Judge ruled that the four will have to serve additional sentence in case of defaulting the penalty.However, the court acquitted another accused, Rajan, an assistant in the National Insurance Company, for lack of evidence
