IIT-Bombay student held for fraud - DNA India - 9 May 2009

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad crime branch arrested Ashish Ravindra Nathan, a second semester student of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay for online credit card frauds.

Nathan, who cleared his higher secondary from Delhi Public School-Bopal, is son of an NRI. According to Nathan, he wanted to study abroad which forced him to indulge in credit card frauds.

Nathan was arrested from a garden near Satyagrah Chavani on Thursday by the cyber crime cell of Ahmedabad crime branch. "He had been operating from the garden and was using the latest technology to hoodwink police," deputy superintendent of police, cyber crime cell, Usha Rada told DNA. The police arrested him on the basis of a complaint filed by one Hiren Shah, a resident of Naranpura.

"Shah was robbed of Rs33,000 with the fraudulent use of credit card," Rada said. However, she refused to comment on the method of investigation which helped the police nab Nathan.

However, crime branch sources said his location was traced through mobile towers and later a network of informers played an important role in his arrest.

Nathan is enrolled in IIT-Bombay, but currently studies in extension centre of IIT-Mumbai at IIT-Gandhinagar. "He was operating since October, 2008 and has so far cheated over 25 people of Rs7 lakh," Rada said.

She said Nathan was operating through duplicate sim cards and using laptop and other equipment. The police seized 15 sim cards, four mobile phones, DVD and CD players, bogus PAN cards, three cheques, 10 passport size photographs of different people and Rs1.30 lakh from him.
