BANGKOK - A MALAYSIAN man wanted in the United States for credit card fraud amounting to US$150 million (S$223 million) was arrested by the Thai authorities and US Secret Service agents on Tuesday.
According to local media, the man, whom Post Today identified as Gooi Kok Seng, was nabbed on the outskirts of Bangkok. Police said a US court had issued a warrant of arrest for the 43-year-old, for illegal possession of data access devices, hacking into computers and stealing data.
Crime Suppression Division police chief Supisal Pakdinaruenar said Gooi was a prominent member of a credit-card fraud gang which had been operating in the US for the past three years.
The group is believed to have stolen credit card information when victims patronised restaurants and major department stores in the US, including Wal-Mart and Office Depot. They then sold the data to Asian gangs to make counterfeit cards, which are sold.
