Hackers steal 450 Social Security numbers from U. of Rochester - - 11 Jan 09

Personal information including Social Security numbers of about 450 current and former University of Rochester students was stolen by hackers this week from a UR database.

According to the university, the information was taken from a non-academic student database and copied illegally to an off-campus IP address. The breach was discovered by school officials on Wednesday. An investigation is continuing.

People whose information was accessed are being notified by the University via e-mail and letter, according to a UR press release.

Provost Ralph Kuncl said the school has notified the FBI, the state Attorney General, the Consumer Protection Board and the Office of Cyber Security about the incident.

“Our network security staff have taken immediate, concrete steps to minimize the chances of this happening again,” he said in the press release.

The University will provide one year of credit monitoring and insurance for the individuals affected by the hacking incident.
